Dramatic irony in the world of Edu 3217.

There were several dramatic irony(s) went I learned the play “Oedipus Rex”. I would say that Dramatic irony? (s) Was one the ways to captured viewer attention. How it could capture viewers’ attention? It was quiet easy. By looked at the words come out from the characters and their actions were different in meaning. It made all the viewers to think more and showed them that they have more knowledge from the actors itself. For example, in the play “Oedipus Rex”, we viewers could saw how Oedipus said things ironically. He kept saying that who were my parents? At the beginning of the play itself he told his citizen that he knows everything. At this moment, viewers already know that Oedipus’s parent was Jocasta and king Laois and there were things that he doesn’t know. This was how dramatic irony worked in the play or dramas. It helped to make them more interesting plus it could add up more knowledge for the viewers as they thought they knew everything in the plays or dramas. With this dramatic irony, It made the audiences smarter than the actors in the plays.
I learn all of this in Edu 3217 which somehow makes me feel smarter compared to others. From this course I knew that human does not realized that sometimes things happened without their attentions to do it or they simply do it in order to cover the things that they do not know. They seem to pretend that they knew everything so that people or others would respect them. Same goes with Oedipus the king. From here I would say that this course teaching the language of dramas would help me to be myself no matter what happen in my life…

The weird and Unhappy Teiresias

Teiresias?
What a name to be remembered in the class when I have to learn the greek play called Oedipus Rex. Edu 3217 fulls of suprises and lots of weird names in the play. And you Teiresias? Of cause, one of the main characters in the play. One thing for sure that I noticed was you are blind. But in the play you was consider as a prophet. There’s something weird about you actually. In my opinion, prophet should be perfect but in the play you were blind. I still wondered how on earth they could associate you with prophet.
Frankly speaking you characteristic and appearance really gave impact to the play that I learned in the class. I have read some of the articles in the internet where they said that there are several reasons what makes you blind. One of the articles mentions the word Athena. She was one of the goddess in Greek mythology where it was said that you saw her taking bath. The other article said that you were hit a pair of copulating snakes with his stick. Hera was very angry with you and she turned you into a woman. How this thing can happened? The last article about you that I have wrote in the internet said that you were drawn into an argument between Hera and her husband Zeus, which related to the theme of who has more pleasure in sex. And gave a truthful answer, but again you had made Hera angry again and struck you blind for the immorality. What a sad story for you Teirisias.
In the play Oedipus Rex, I would say that you were a man with knowledge. That was reason why King Oedipus called you in order to seek the truth. The king wanted to know more about the previous king plus who was the murderer of King Laois. While analyzed the play, I could said that you were also a passionate man. You show others that although you were mocked by Oedipus, still you were able to remain calm and stick to your thought and action.
In the end, I should mention that I am very impress with your character in the play, Oedipus Rex. Edu 3217 taught me different ways of looking and analyzed the characters in the plays or dramas. In the real life, I for sure would apply this method in order for me to understand others better.

Lear the "blind" King

Lear the “blind” king!!!!

Today, I have watched a movie version of the play entitle King Lear. I am still reading the play and tried as much as I could to understand the play much better. This movie version released in 1983 the year I am still not exists in this world. From my understanding, I found that King Lear was trying to be a good father by decided to give out his kingdom to his daughters which was Goneril,Regan and Cordelia. Before they could have the kingdom, Lear asked them to show they love him. So, both Regan and Goneril used their power of flattery speech to proclaim their love towards Lear. And they managed to fool Lear but Cordelia does not managed to sell herself in order to prove that she really care and love towards him. The word “nothing” does not pleased Lear. The “blind” Lear was not aware that he has misjudged Cordelia’s love and gave his kingdom to Regan and Goneril. Lear was so mad with Cordelia because she was not able to express her love in the way he wanted it to be.
I could say that due to this incident, Lear has proven that he was “blind”, blind because he does not have the ability to understand others especially Cordelia and Kent (his most loyal friend).
In EDU 3217, this play has taught me how to be a better person on not easily being fooled by others. King Lear has told me from his action in the play so I must aware while dealing with others. There are many moral values that I could apply it to the students. I hoped that in the future this course teaching of the language of drama could be used for young Malaysian to become a good citizen.

Schemata that I have to activate!!!!

Excitement, happy but there still have rooms for me to improve in the way for presenting my lesson in front of the class. For my set induction session, I have choose one of my favorite play by Bernard Shaw entitle “Pygmalion”. I found that this play is very suitable for my target groups plus it has the power to attract my students in order for them to participate during the lesson. I have showed one part of the movie version of the play as my set induction to activate and help the students to have some gist what they are going to learn for today’s lesson.
The movie that I showed to the students really attracts my student’s attentions. In the clips it shows a flower girl trying to sell her flowers to the gentlemen’s but she was shocked when someone jotted down the words that she spoke. This play is actually about a common girl who attracted to learn proper English.
In a few years time, I am going to graduate as an English teacher. So I believe that I must take the responsible to teach my students to speak proper English. By using this play, I hope that my students will benefits the knowledge and apply it in the real life. May be after learning this play I am going to allow my students to watch the full movie version of the play.
It is true that I have nervous problems during presenting my set induction. I don’t know why this problem keeps on coming when I have to stand in front of the class. I know that I have to do something with this problem.
Edu 3217 have taught me how to understand the play better so that I am able to explain and teach plays in the future. This course also helps me to practice to control my nervous while in front of the class. So, for my next pre reading and while reading session I am going to apply what I have learn during lecture so that I can deliver my lesson and conduct my activities with any problems and one thing for sure I have to do my best to win my students hearts.

“Scripts that made my life spinning”

Before I started wrote on this blog, I would like to thank Mark because he was such a good partner in writing our script together. Today I would like to share my experience writing scripts in Edu 3217 which was teaching the language of drama.
Actually the script that I have worked on with Mark was not the first time for me to write a script. But it was the first time for me to collaborate with my friend to come out with a script especially this script was consider as one of the assignments that I have to submit. Normally, I just wrote my own scripts in order for me to fill up my time. The scripts that I wrote also can be considered as one way for me to express something or someone in a different way.
I believe that writing scripts was not an easy task to do. There are lots of reasons for it. For example, actors or performers would use the script as their guide lines when they have to perform on the stage or set. In other word script was the story line of dramas or plays and others would judge the performance by looking at how actors followed the script. So, not everyone could come out with the good scripts in a short time. Writing scripts could caused us spend our time just for practiced so that later on the masterpiece could born.
The experience of writing the script in this course was very important for me. Edu 3217 was the course that wanted me to analyze texts of dramas and plays. So, with this experience of writing my own script, I am able to know where the punch lines, the strong are and weaknesses of the script. This experience also helped me to generate better understanding towards the dramas and plays plus I am not being confused again and lost somewhere in the middle.
So the this valuable experience of writing my own script with my partner in Edu 3217 could made my easier when I had to deals with different types of dramas and plays in this course.
